Preliminary Structural Design

This is essentially a two-part part project in preliminary structural design.

For the first part, I used an excel spreadsheet to facilitate in the basic gravity design of beams and girders. Loading combinations, area loads, and dimensions are input and formulas calculate the maximum bending moment, maximum shear stress, maximum allowable deflection, and second moment required for the beam to not deflect beyond the maximum deflection. With the additional input of the second moment of the selected beam another formula calculated the actual anticipated deflection. Only the values listed above are considered, torsion and other effects are not considered.

The second part of the project involved drawing the structure in SAP 2000 and allowing the analysis process to select the appropriate section of wide flange beam.

The file below includes these processes and SAP analysis of the sections chosen via excel calculations.
