As part of our Architectural Engineering third-year design studio, my team and I are designing a mixed-use high rise. I developed several simple massing models and corresponding schematic layouts, then began on this design where I aimed to have the massing respond to the site and add variety to Austin's contemporary skyline.
A Capitol View Corridor bisects the site, limiting the construction height to about sixty feet above grade, except for the north-west corner. This mass accepts the geometry created by the site as a design feature and creates a form that shifts subtly with the view.
Our current plan includes retail, offices, and residences with a large terrace extended from the fourth-floor amenity level over the parking garage.
We have also taken preliminary steps towards designing the structural system. Currently, we think the final design will use a diagrid frame to minimize materials and add visual interest to the facade.
I built the mass in Revit and have imported the model into a Sketchup model of the surrounding buildings.
